XTERRA BUFFELSPOORT

The first race of the season is always a bit stressful , coming out of base training, having done a lot of work, you feel anxious to race and to see how your training paid off but together with that there is a bit of nervousness if the speed, endurance and strength is improving and if you can put it all together so early in the season.

Xterra Buffelspoort 2011 was sensational! From the moment I arrived at the venue I knew it was going to be a great day. Xterra Buffelspoort had made Xterra history with the most entrants, well over a thousand athletes, racking their bikes and preparing for this grueling event.

Xterra Buffelspoort has always been a very technical, hard race, usually due to the extreme heat and rocky, technical terrain and this year was no exception. Due to the rain over the last few weeks I expected a lot of muddy sections on the bike and technical hilly run, but after days of sunshine just before the race it dried the route out and conditions were perfect for a fast race.

By 8am I had registered, set up my transition spot, warmed up and was anxiously awaiting the mass start at 8:15.

My new SAILFISH G-Range wetsuit fitting like a glove, I was ready to start yet another triathlon. As men and ladies all start together, I lined up right behind the great, world champion Conrad Stoltz, wishing I could gain power from his ora somehow:). The gun fired and off we went! One big 1.5km swim lap, 1 loop of 26km bike lap and a 2 lapper 12km run awaited us.

The swim went well, I thought I had started a bit slow, but by the last buoy, I had a good position, 1st lady and 11 overall and that’s how we exited the water. Running out with JEEP athlete Ryan Redman, known for his swimming abilities, I knew I had a solid, good swim leg down.
Now for the mtb leg. The route was either not as technical as I can remember or my bike skill and strength had improved quite a bit( I am hoping it’s the latter), because even though I was not feeling 100% I had a good bike leg and kept on opening up the lead.
Entering into transition for the last time I was ready to test my running legs, so within seconds I was off my bike, into my INOV-8 F-Lite 195’s, out of transition and onto the last leg of this race. As I ran out , I passed Conrad who looked like he was taking an afternoon jog so comfortable was he running, leading the men’s division by miles, he was heading out onto his 2nd lap as I was heading out onto my first.
The run was extraordinary. They took us up and over the Dam wall, across the river and as I was scampering on my hands and knees up the opposite wall, with the spray of the water rushing through the Dam flood gates on my face, for a brief moment I absorbed it all and realized this is why I love Xterra so much. The run route was technical, rocky climbs and steep rocky downhill’s, but my INOV-8 F-Lites gripped like glue, not missing a step, not sliding out, just enhancing my running abilities which they are known for doing! The river crossings were no problem and the water just ran out of the shoe, the breathable upper mesh drying up quickly, no blisters no slipping and sliding, the F-lites really impressed me once again.

With the finish line insight I was in high spirits, I had achieved what I had came out to do, testing my strength against other athletes and racing all out. Satisfied and relieved I crossed the line in 1st place!!

Thank you to all the organizers, Stillwatersports for hosting yet another great event!

Thank you INOV-8, SAILFISH, RUDY PROJECT and 32Gi for supplying me with top notch gear that really gives me the edge, enhancing my performance every step of the way.

Trail running brought to you by INOV-8!!

“Once it gets into your blood, off road running is a powerful narcotic. Technical off road running shoes from INOV-8 is your only hope of coping with this painful addiction”

TEAM INOV-8

Sometimes people or things cross your path and you don’t know why or how but you either grab the opportunity or you let it slip you by… and so it was that in the end of 2010 I was approached by Mike Morehen to join into a new and exciting triathlon team. TEAM INOV-8.

INOV-8 is a UK based company specializing in LIGHT WEIGHT, EXTREME GRIP, and NATURAL RUNNING shoes, and has won numerous awards for their products.

What is a “natural” running shoe? According to the specialists, a natural running shoe promotes your running biomechanics to run as close to as possible to running barefoot. Lots of ideas sprung from the “barefoot” running communities, analyzing their strides and looking at their foot strike, forefoot roll, stresses on joints when the foot lands on different places and angles. And what they have seen is that with barefoot runners there is more of a mid-forefoot foot placing, a natural outer to inner, mid to forefoot roll (supination to pronation) and an increased tension build up in the Achilles and plantar fascia to increase the push off phase of the foot. Thus making you faster and more agile over rough terrain.

INOV-8 had taken all of this into consideration and built a shoe to promote all of these aspects of barefoot running and added a superior light weight, breathable upper mesh and a sticky grippy sole to give you the speed and traction needed in any off-road,trail and road event!

Go check out their their website for all the info you need!!

Slovenia in a nutshell

Training through the winter time is always difficult, especially if you have no definite plan ahead and in what direction...so winter 2010 had its ups and its downs…

UPS:
-winning a few and finishing 2nd in the TIAVIGO Duathlon Series
- being happily married for few months
- having a good training session here and there
- working in a great practice

DOWNS:
> continuous niggles
> on and off training due to illness
> no plan = no direction or outcome

So by the end of winter I was just praying for a solid block of training without niggles and sniffles… and whola, my prayers were answered... a training camp in Slovenia for 6 weeks was being held for some of the top TSA triathletes leading up to the World Triathlon Champs in Budapest. I was not invited at first, as I had missed SA Champs and had not been selected to go to Budapest, but by the misfortune of another injured athlete, I went to the camp as a helping hand/manager/athlete and got the opportunity to train with and participate in some selected races aswell.PERFECT!

And so the planning started, once again I had minimal time to plan an event others had been planning and anticipating for months, but the challenge was on and within days almost everything was planned, tickets, accommodation, races DONE. I must add, if it wasn’t for the backing and support of Dreyer, who still got the brunt end of the deal (6 weeks alone, in winter, as a newly wed OUCH!) it would not have happened. So after 2 weeks of planning I was off to meet the other triathletes in Slovenia.
NB!! Thank you INOV-8, my exciting new sponser for your support, the shoes and kit were the talk of the town!!
But more of INOV-8 in my next few posts.....

(turn head slowly to left to view pic)

The trip there: Dubai(flight delay)-->run my ass off& almost missed connecting flight-->Venice, no bike bags-->frustration-->long bus trip to Slovenia-->no cycling for a week-->frustration-->bikes nowhere to be found-->irritation-->bikes in Dubai?Italy?who knows…then I decided drastic times calls for drastic measures:

(Everyone had quit a good laugh as I was riding with the rest of the SA team on their super fast racing bikes!!)

The 6 weeks went by very quickly, (although Dreyer would report differently :)),we had a good training schedule and I had the opportunity to train under the guidance of Lindsey Parry and Emma Swanswick, and in 6 weeks time I was feeling stronger and faster than in a long time. I felt for the first time what it was like to be a PRO athlete, and it was great. Train, eat, sleep, train, eat, and sleep. But what made it even better was that I could share the experience with a bunch of other like minded athletes, and thats always a bonus!

The training facilities in SLO were great, enough of everything, hills, flats, scenic routes, amazing trails to run on, a brand new tartan track,50m heated pool and the best of all, the cleanest, clearest most gorgeous lakes to do our open water swim training in!

While the other triathletes were dashing off to different European Cups every weekend I decided to stick to the dirt and race at the last two European Xterra’s, Xterra Germany and Switzerland. But that’s a whole story on its own…

Amazing Slovenian choc filled pancakes on a rainy day! mmmm

The trip came to an end with the group going to World tri champs in Hungary and myself taking a 24h trip in the opposite direction to Switzerland. I had mixed feelings as it all came to and end and made another UPS and DOWNS list to put it all in perspective:

UPS:
ü Great training block
ü Great training facilities
ü Great training partners
ü Amazing race experience gained
ü Life experience gained

DOWNS:
§ Leaving Dreyer behind
§ A bit of bike damage due to travel
§ Leaving Dreyer behind for so long
§ Bit of credit card dept
§ Leaving Dreyer behind for so long in the crappy winter time

More on my Xterra experiences next time!
